11 Plus English Comprehension Course

The perfect course for the child who struggles to get their ideas on paper.

The 11 Plus English paper is a core part of the entrance exams to many grammar schools and most independent schools.

The English paper in the 11 Plus exams usually comprises a:
  • comprehension paper; and
  • writing task.
Children are expected to show a high standard of writing and a flair for the English language. They need to show a depth of understanding and an ability to infer what is being said (i.e. read between the lines).
The Reading Test is also a vital element of the Year 6 SATS exams. So, an ability to read well, comprehend what is read, analyse and explain a passage in detail is vital to achieving good grades in all primary school level exams, such as the SATs and the 11 Plus.
The revised Key Stage 2 syllabus and GCSE syllabus has put a lot of emphasis on the need for detailed answers, and the child's ability to explain key concepts in the passage in a confident manner. Therefore, excellent comprehension skills will also help your child's writing skills as they progress through school life.

Detailed Feedback
Most school teachers don't have the time to provide the detailed feedback your child needs, all the time. With class sizes at the largest they've ever been, children often don't get the individual attention they need, or the feedback they need to improve speedily. This lack can have a compounding effect on their confidence, motivation and progress.
Geek School's English Comprehension Course uses papers from Independent Schools, which are thorough and of a high standard, helping children build the skills and experience they need to excel in their exams.
The marked copy of the paper will be sent back with detailed feedback explaining your child's mistakes and give them tips on how to improve.

My name is Joycellyn Akuffo, and I am the managing director of Geek School Tutoring Limited. As a mum of two (one who goes to a top independent secondary school, and other in an outstanding prep school), I know what you're going through! I've been there for one, and I'm going through it with the other!

I am a journalist by profession with more than a decade's worth of experience. Some of the publications I have worked for include Woman & Home, Glamour, Cosmopolitan, Practical Parenting, Mother & Baby and BBC Good Homes (just to name a few!).

This experience of writing at a corporate level comes in very handy when I teach children to write. So, one of the strengths of Geek School Tutoring is a system that helps to ignite passion and creativity into the writing of our students because if I'm one thing, I am definitely and always will be the 'girl who likes to play with words'.

My courses cut through the jargon and bring information to parents and children alike to help bring equality of choices to education. This is reflected in the course content I provide, and in the research, I do to help parents demystify the 11 Plus! I am always open to suggestions, so please do drop me a line if you are interested in hearing about an area in particular.
